BIO

Jonathan Joubert is a contemporary British artist based in Brighton, U.K. He works primarily in oil on aluminium panels, combining rapid, gestural mark-making with traditional glazing techniques. He is best known for portraits drawn quickly with permanent marker, executed without revision. These drawings establish the core structure of each work and are developed through layered oil paint. The practice operates between immediacy and control, allowing raw gesture and deliberate process to coexist. Areas of exposed aluminium are left visible, enabling light to interact directly with the surface and shift with the viewer’s position. Joubert’s work engages with time, presence, and the transfer of energy inherent in the act of making.
