My drawings are made to feel fast, alive and almost thrown into being.
Against slow, polished and carefully created backgrounds, they hold a pleasurable and pressured tension between accident and control,
immediacy and inevitability.

Jonathan Joubert

British artist and Royal College of Art graduate based in Montréal, Canada

Jonathan Joubert is a contemporary British artist based in Montréal, Canada. He graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, with an MA in Fine Art Painting in 2011. His practice spans oil painting on aluminium, works on paper and digitally constructed environments.

Working between rapid drawing and highly controlled painting, Joubert begins many works with portraits or figures drawn in seconds using permanent marker. These instinctive marks are carried into paintings developed through underpainting, layered colour and traditional glazing. Areas of exposed aluminium remain visible, allowing reflected light to function as an active material within the work.

His recurring heads, divers, falling figures and suspended bodies occupy spaces that are at once psychological, physical and cosmic. Across the work, immediacy is held against duration, and accident against control.
